Pokeroot, often referred to as pokeberry, is a notable herb recognised for its ability to stimulate the lymphatic system. However, it is toxic and should only be used under the guidance of a qualified herbalist.
This remarkable perennial can reach heights of up to 8 feet, characterised by its striking deep-red stems and abundant dark-purple berries that appear in the autumn. Its roots are quite substantial, resembling an arm in thickness and spreading out like the intricate network of an octopus’s tentacles or our circulatory system.
Although pokeroot is native to the southern regions of the United States, it is quite resilient and thrives well in the UK. Preferring full sunlight, it can also adapt to partial shade and grows effectively in a variety of soil types. Once it becomes established, it requires very little maintenance.
