Rue boasts a rich heritage of use in medicine, cooking, and even magic. While its popularity has waned in modern times due to concerns about toxicity, it remains a valued member of garden ecosystems, especially as a companion plant that attracts pollinators and deters pests.

In ancient Greece, rue was highly regarded for its protective qualities. People believed it could ward off evil spirits and safeguard against witchcraft. This belief endured for centuries, giving rise to protective talismans like the Italian cimaruta, a ‘sprig of rue’ worn around the neck or placed above children's beds for safety.

Historically, rue was utilized to treat various health issues, recognized for its antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and digestive benefits. In some cultures, particularly in Italy and Ethiopia, it is still used as a culinary herb, though only in very small amounts, as it adds a unique flavor to dishes and beverages like grappa or coffee.

However, rue contains furanocoumarins, compounds that can irritate the skin and are toxic in large quantities. Therefore, it’s important to handle the plant with care, especially if your skin may be exposed to sunlight afterward. We recommend against ingesting it unless under the guidance of a qualified herbalist.
